MAREO CASE
THE RETRIAL To Start on June 1 (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 7. The retrial of Eric Alareo for the alleged murder of his wife, Thelma Alareo. will open at Auckland on June 11. Alareo, who is at present an inmate of Moun'. Eden Prison, was sentenced to death by Mr Justice Pair at Auckland criminal sessions on February 2S. The retrial was ordered following an appeal to the Excculive (‘ouri'il. presided over hy tho Governor General. “At the first trial. the Crown case was handled by Mr. A. LI- Johnstone. K.C.. and Air. V. N. Hubble, for the reason that tho Crown Prosecutor at Auckland, Mr. A. li. Meredith, eras on his way back to New Zealand after managing the All Blacks in Great Britain. Now that he has taken up his duties as Crown Prosecutor again, the Crown evidence will be led by him. Alareo, at ‘the rc-tria-1, will again be defended by Air. H. F. O'Leary. K.C.. of Wellington, with Air. Trevor Henry and Air. K. C. Aekins. Frosh evidence is to come from Australia. It is not yet known how many Australian witnesses will be brought to Auckland. Their evidence will not be taken on commission, as is usual in civil eases.
It is understood that Justice Ostler will be the Judge.
