CORRESPONDENCE

WEEKLY HALF HOLIDAY. (To tho Editor.) Sir.—The Saturday half-holiday has had a fair trial, and it is no secret, that it has not been a huge success. Almost every business in town has been hard hit.—so much so that a petition for another poll is being started by business people in this town. There is no doubt that the petition will be strongly opposed,—but' the election has still to be fought and the last result overturned. Tn my opinion, Sir. one of the main reasons for t! o Saturday half-holiday being carried was the lack of harmony between employers and their emp'oyees. For many years, shop-hands wore forced to .tand be hind their counters when there was a iace meeting or an important football match on. That was quite in order if there was any business doing, but for a couple of hours the town would be dead as everybody was at the sports ground. I believe that if the employees were given an hour and a half off on these rare and important occasions, there would be no Saturday half-holi-day to-day. O n Wednesday the Rugby League are putting on their biggest fame nf the year and/ T think that’ if the employers gave their assistants time off, say from 2 30 till 4.30. it would be the first st’ep in reaching harmony, and eventually getting back the Wednesday hal(’-holiday. I am etc., “WEDNESDAY. ’ ’
