WORK AND WORKLESS

NEW YORK, September 7 In an interview with the Australian Associated Press to-day, Mr Stewart declared that during a hurried visit to Canada, he held conversations with municipal authorities concerning sepcial and industrial problems. He found the authorities anxious to^achieve greater centralisation of unemployment relief, to which end there had recently been passed an Unemployment Insurance Act, largely founded on the British Act. He said: “As in Australia, authority over industrial issues, had previously been regarded as the prerogative of the State Governments, but the Canadian Legislature in this instance has claimed authority from the section of the Versailles Treaty which called upon the signatories to take appropriate steps to keep the industrial peace. This is not without importance to Australia, who, of course, assumed similar responsibilities af Versailles.” On his way home, Mr Stewart expects to visit Washington, and thence will make his way to Vancouver.
