FINAL CONCERT

GREY COMPETITIONS Trophies Presented The 1935 Festival of the West Coast Competitions Society was brought to a successful conclusion last evening, when the second demonstration concert of prize winners was presented to a large and ( appreeia.tive audience. The programme wag a most enjoyable and varied one, and each competitor appearing was heartily applauded. Each performer was presented with beautiful flowers, and other gifts. Prior to the National Anthem being played, th e Mayor, Mr W. Meldrum. presented the trophies to the various winners. He said that now tQiat the Festival had concluded, he had a most pleasing diuty to perform. He; congratulated the, trophy winners on their success, and also the other prize winners. While congratulating hhe winners, lie had a. (word of encouragement for the losers, who had done such good work throughout the Competitions. He urged them to persevere in their work so that; next year they would be able to take their place among the successfn competitors. The standard of work had reached >a very high level throughout the Festival, as evidenced by the complimentary remarks of the judges. Preparation for Competitions served a very useful purpose, for the training entailed helped to mould character and thus fit the competitors for workin the world long after nc forsaken the idea- of Competitions.. Mr Meldrum said that it spoke very higlv l v for the teaching profession of Grcvmouth that such first class talent was available. Many limes at previous festivals, the judges had remarked on the high standard attained, and he thought, that such could be attributed to th P , work of the Reachers. Shakespearean Contest (Gilbert Rose Bowl) —Miss K. Tibbles. 234 pts; runner-up. Miss G. Wallwork, 231 pts. •Special prize, presented by Mr J. R. Lester (judge of the elocutionary classes) —Miss Margaret Ellery. Dancing. Fraer Cup (for National Dancingunder 10, West Coasters only)—Miss Viv. Heenan (Hokitika), 304 pts; runner-up, Miss Joyce Inglis, 298 pts. Tennent Trophy (most versatile performer)—Miss Laurel Boustridgo. Stent Trophy (best all-round dancer) —Miss Melva Moss. Junior Trophy (most; promising dancer) —Miss Viv. Heenan. As each winner came forward to receive, a trophy they were heartily applauded.
