HOCKEY

GAJVECS AT HOKITIKA. The West Coast Hockey Association’s competition was continued yes terday, when two games, were playec at Cass Square, Hokitika. The weathei was gloriously fine, but the ground wa.« fairly muddy. A high standard oi play was witnessed by a good attendance of spectator.-*. MAWHERA’S FIRST DEFEAT. Mawhera (Greymouth) met their first defeat for the season, at the hands of Tahua A (Hokitika)', going down by seven goals to three. Mawhern were without the services of Perrin and this was* no doubt a contributing factor towards their defeat. The game was played at a fast pace and the nippy Tahua forward line was more than the Mawhera backs could check. For Tahua Morgan (3), Fleming (2), Sumner and Hurren scored, while Devonport (2) and Pascoe netted for Mawhera. ST. COLUMBA’S FIRST WIN. St. Columba (Greymouth) met Tahua B on the A ground, which was, if anything in worse condition than the other ground. The game was one of the most interesting in this year’s competition, to date and resulted in St. Columba scoring their first win, by three goals* (scored by Knapp (2). and Butler) to nil. The standard or play of the winners showed a great improvement over their previous matches and their victory was thoroughly de served. The referees wer Messrs Sumner and Newton. Prior to the competition matches, the A and B representative teams met in a practice game, the A’s running out winners by three goals to nil, scored by Morgan (2) and Fleming. Two or three of the A players were not available and their play was somewhat disorganized as a result. The standard showed an improvement over the practice game played at Rugby Park last week, it being noticed that the forewards had evidently concentrated more on short passing, than on the hardhitting game 2 which has, to a certain extent made individual play almost a necessity on the Coast. As the re suit of the game it is understood that some changes are likely to be made in Hie team to meet the Indians. Th* game was controlled by Messrs W. J. Butler and Sumner.
