The quaint fact that not only are there no apple trees in that fruitful place. Norfolk Island, but also that the importation of apple trees or apples is forbidden, was mentioned in an interview by Mr. G. Scarrott, who has returned to Hastings after having spent six years in the island. Mr. Scarrott said that the islanders are afraid that apples or apple trees would bring pests with them, and the “mainland” residents have to seek other means of keeping the doctor away. So long as an “islanders’ ” council is in power, Mr. Scarrott said, there will never be apples on Norfolk Island. The chap wearing the brown bowler (looked like a commercial), noting a fellow-passenger by the “limited” lighting a cigarette remarked: “I see you’re a heavy cigarette smoker.” “How d’you know?” queried the other, looking surprised. “Oh, *t doesn’t need a 1 Sherlock’ to tell that,” laughed the stranger, “look at your lingers! But why smoke readymades? You should roll your own, same as me. Those packet things are often as dry as a bone—and as tasteless, through being kept so long in stock. Besides rolling your own comes a lot cheaper. Roll them just as you want them—then they’re always moist and fresh.” “What’s your tobacco?” asked the youth. “Riverhead Gold —sweet as a nut, full of flavour, and can’t hurt you—it J s toasted.” Let me roll you one? Then you’ll see.” And he did see! “Toasted” is at once the finest and most harmless of all tobaccos. There are only five brands: l Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Cavendish, Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold. The two latter are appreciated by all cigarette smokers.

While being examined in the New Plymouth Magistrate’s Court under a judgment summons, a debtor turned to the magistrate and said, with respect to the debt- in question, which was for rent, “Of course I intend ultimately to pay the debt.” Counsel: “And what does ‘ultimately’ mean?” The debtor: “Well, ‘eventually.’ ” “Thank you”, said counsel, “I appreciate the distinction.” The debtor then said he expected his prospects would improve by about next September.

Southland will soon become known as the El Dorado of New Zealand if the investment of capital in northern centres continues much longer at the present rate (says the Southland News). The discovery of platinum deposits near Awakino is claimed by a New Plymouth man, Mr. R. W. Davies, ot Spotswood. Mr. Davies, who is well known as a successful diviner and a keen amateur geologist, has brought back samples of a heavy white metal which he believes to be the precious metal. Mr. Davies’s samples were discovered in a sedimentary wash right in the back country, where he had made several prospecting trips. He does not yet know the extent of his discovery, but hopes shortly to establish the presence of a long chain of metal deposits in that part of the country. With the metal he believes to be platinum, Mr. Davies discovered several small rubies, evidence of the great age of the deposit. The deposit is entirely sedimentary, the metal being in small flakes.
