REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.'. May 27. Among the visitors to the Maruia Hot Si") rings Chateau during the past week were:—Messrs J. Wallis’ (Christchurch), 11. Marshall (Christchurch). W. R. Argue, B. Argue, J. Wakefield. F. L. A. Stratford (Nelson);, Mesdames Davis, Wakefield, Harris, Nelson,, Misses Arg-ne, H. M. Garland and T. Gough (Nelson). In the league football matches played yesterday, Ahaura defeated Reefton by 19 points 'to IS; and Waratah beat Nelson Creek by 32 points to 14. Mrs R. Patterson, probably the oldest resident of Reefton* is at present seriously ill.

The junior rugby game, Waratah v. Cronadun, played at the Racecourse on Sunday, resulted in a win for Oronadun by six Co five. For the winners, B. Gilroy and AV. Bonifacio scored tiies, and W. Honey scored and G. Bonifacio converted for the losers. The High School resumed to-day for the second term., with quite a good attendance. Mr W. B. Auld (Chairman) and Mr H. Campbell (Secretary) of the CommiittcQ, were present to introduce to the staff and the children, Mr F. S. Hayes. Mr Hayes suitably responded. Miss Wallace also took up her duties for the first time in the school this morning.

Mr IT. Campbell presided over a meeting of the Executive of the Reefton R.S.A., on Saturday night. There were also present Messrs J. Hawthorne. A. G. Wells, B. Winchester R. W. Baumgart and J. Scott, Waiuta. The resignation of ’the president (Mr W. S. Pratt), owing to his departure from the district, was received with regret. It was decided to call a general meeting for Saturday;. 15th to deal with the matter of a new appointment. The action of 'the Waiuta SubBranch in purchasing a wreath for a deceased comrade was endorsed. It was notified that the annual Returned Soldiers’ Bal] at Waiuta would be held on Saturday, S-th June. Assistance was granted to a returned soldier, who was evidently urgently in need of the same. Mr J. Scott; of Waiuta Branch, was appointed as the delegate to the Dominion Council of N.Z.R.S.A., to be held in Wellington on 19th June.

The funeral of the la/te Airs Margaret Leggoe. of Ikamatua, took place yesterday afternoon,, a very large num ber attending from, all parts of tne West Coast. The services? ait the Methodist Church and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. C. E. Dickens. A large number of floral tokens were a tribute to the respect in which the deceased was held. A number of friends and relatives of Airs AlcClymont, of Black’s Point, met yesterday to celebrate her 82nd birthday. A beautifully iced cake, with 82 candlesi, the gift of her grandchildren, was cut and each received a piece. Airs McG’lymont .had been a resident of Black’s Point for 50 years, but has spent the last four years with her daughters. Airs Thompson and Airs Dobson, in Reef ton. Alr Burns was at the township on Saturday and left about 4.15 o’clock for his residence, situated on the road to the Big River Aline, and was not afterwards seen. Word was received yesterday of the tragic death of Air Michael 'Burns at Big River. The deceased was subject to fits and it is thought -that he was attacked by one of these when proceeding homej. as there was no necessity to go near the creek. He received a fractured s’kull.
