HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.} HOKITIKA, May 27. The Gael arrived from Okuru and Bruce Bay this morning early, with a cargo of canned whitebait from Okum and sheep from Bruce Bay. The vessel sails for Wellington to-morrow timber laden. There was a large attendance at the “Ginger Jar” dance on Saturday night at the Soldiers’ Hall.

The new aeroplane in use here for training purposes is being kept very busy, and during the past three days it has done many trips. A full load of mail and other matter along with a passenger, was taken to Bruce Bay and Okuru to-day by Mr Mercer’s plane. The Kokatahi-Koiterangi Show opens at 2 p.m. to-morrow at Kokatahi Hall, and a very complete display of the farm, garden, fruit, home and other products of the district will be made. There are over 700 entries, including very many in the cookery sections, the exhibits in which are always in good demand when put up for sale on the second day of the show. Last week’s rainfall here was about an inch and three-quarters, while there was nearly 43 hours of sunshine.

The advanced age of ninety-eight years was reached by a female inmate of Seaview Mental Hospital who died on Saturday morning. She had been in the institution for more than fifty-six years, but had been confined to bed for the past four years.

The results of the basketball matches plaved on Saturday were as follows:— A. Grade: Old Girls A 18, School 3; St. Mary’s A won from Old Girls B by default. B grade—Koiterangi won from School C by default: Ross 6, Koiterangi 4; Ross 10, St. Mary’s B 2; Koiterangi 13, St. Mary’s B 2.

The funeral on Saturday of the late Mr George Davidson was very largely attended. Members of the Hokitika Fire Brigade, members of the Hospital Board and other local societies were present, while Piper Cullen headed the procession playing a lament, with representatives of the Caledonian Society attending. A large number of floral tributes filled a large car. The Rev. G. A. Naylor conducted the services at the residence and the graveside. Wild, 112—36—76. In the ladies unearned handicap bogey match the best were: Miss L. Knight 1 up, Mrs Thompson a’l square, Mrs McManaway all square, Miss B. Johnson 1 down, Miss M. Burger 1 down. Mrs Houston 6 down, Miss F. Wells 6 down, Mrs Wilson 8 down.

On Monday next an inter-club fixture, Grey mouth v. Hokitika will be played the A team at Greymouth and the B team at Hokitika. A concert and dance held in the Woodstock Hall on Friday to commemorate the Rimu and Woodstock Women’s Institute’s third birthday proved very successful. Hokitika Institute provided a programme of Scottish items. A dance was then held. The Borough Council were advised at the monthly meeting of the Fire Board’s levy of £285 10s. Six local butchers asked better lighting at the abattoir. Air J. L. Turner wrote suggesting the formation of a good strong committee to improve Cass Square for picnics, etc. Dr. Teiehelmann was appointed delegate to the meeting at Grey mouth on May 28 to form a Tourist. Development Committee. The District Engineer advised that the Council’s final payment of £522 7s 7d towards tar sealing the highway was required, adding that the job was quite a good one. Mr Singer was refused permission to erect a hut on the east town belt road reserve. Kanieri Electric Ltd., were given permission to erect.a duplicate 11,000 vote transmission line between Kanieri and Hokitika as per plan attached. The sum of £2 2s was voted to the Cancel’ Campaign Society. N.Z. Refrigerating Co. advised 9 sheep were delivered into Hokitika last month. A motion of condolence with the. widow and relatives of the late Mr George Davidson was carried, the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) referring with regret to the loss sustained. The Mayor said the water supply needed a complete overhaul. Wood pipes were almost too costly. The Council had a bore made near the river and at 40 feet they obtained a supplv of water that was approved by the Health Department. They were putting down an Sin. pipe, and. if th; same supply was met with tests of the water would be made with a view to trying out the supply. If it were not favourable then they would have to face a renewal of the present line of pipes from Lake Kanieri.

approved, and it was resolved that on the recommendation of Supervser Moore 1000 acres be reserved on Donegal Creek, Road, and that reliable men be employed to prospect the area. The Unemployment Board wrote approving of youth’s subsidy to G. Agnew, Arahura; W. Walsh, Hokitika; and G. J. A. Cooper, Hokitika; also approving of recommendation for increase for prospecting to P. McQuilkin and J. Mcßae, and asking for further particulars in regard to the work being undertaken. Applications for subsidy approved were: F. M. Beveridge and four others wrote re position about difficulties of prospecting at Gillespie’s Beach, owing t dredging rights and asking for advice. —Resolved that request cannot be entertained.
