RUGBY FOOTBALL

COAST BEAT BULLER By Fair Margin INTERESTING GAME. (Per Press Association.) WESTPORT, May 25.

Buller and West Coast had the first of the home-and-home Rugby matches of the season at Victoria Square this afternoon under ideal playing conditions and with a good attendance of spectators. The match was of special interest because from it a combined team was to be chosen to meet the Nel-son-Marlborough-Golden Bay combination at Nelson next Wednesday. West Coast fielded a much heavier pack than Buller, and while the latter held them to a score of 3 to nil in the first spell, the weight told its tale in the second spell, when the West Coast backs had a feast of the ball, and indulged in many beautiful passing movement, in which forwards also joined.

Mann, the Coast wing three-quarter, was the first to score an unconverted try. Play up to half-time was very even. In the second spe 1 West scored two tries for West Coast and A. Scandrett scored one try. Hughes and Gilbert each converted one try.

E. Holder scored two unconverted tries for Buller. On the day’s play, Graham (Buller) outshone Gilbert (Coast) as full-back, but still the latter was pretty safe. Holder, Strachan, Buttress, Orman, Harding, Robertson and Brown were the best of the Buller team. Mann, M. Davidson, Hooper, the twn Hughes, McNeight, Frei las and R. King were outstanding for West Coast. WEST COAST-BULLER TEAM. WESTPORT, May 26.
