The bank rale was raised by one half pei- cent, to three per cent., owing to the Bank of France’s gold hoi-l-ing again falling heavily. With the idea of stabilising the local cheese markets, a meeting of cheese company representatives from Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu met to-day, when it was explained that butter factories in the same districts had formed a federation, which had successfully eliminated price cutting, and now the Dairy Board was endeavouring to frame a similar scheme to be operative over the whole of the Dominion. The Board, however, did not intend to deal in similar manner with the cheese market in New Zealand at the moment, but would appreciate any work in the desired direction accomplished by the cheese companies themselves. A com mittee was set up to bring down a workable scheme.
