A Brisbane cable records the death of Mr W. J. Ferguson, who opposed the Premier of Queensland, Mr Forgan Smith, for the Mackay seat, in the recent State elections. Mr Ferguson, who died from head injuries received in a motor-car accident during the campaign, was a member of the first Labour Party elected to the New South Wales Parliament in 1894.

An Adelaide cable states that Professor Shaun. Professor of Economies at Adelaide University was fatally injured in a fall from the second storey of the University building. He wa« found on the concrete pavement, with a badly fractured skull, and died cn route to the hospital. Professor Shann who was fifty-one years of age, was one of Australia’s foremost economists.

The wedding took place at the Roman Catholic Cathedral, Christchurch on Wednesday, of Mrs Gwendoline Esther Wilson, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. A. Anderson, Kirwee, and Peter Percy, youngest son of the late Mr W. Joyce and Mrs Joyce of Greymouth. Rev. Father J. McMonagle celebrated Nuptial Mass, and Miss Dorothy Blake was organist. The bridesmaid was Miss Kathleen Anderson and Mr D. Rathbun, of Greymouth, carried out the duties of best man.

According to a London cablegram, Doctor William Ewart Gye, who 32 years ago was a railway porter, has been appointed as Director of the Imperial Cancer Research Funds, one of the world’s most outstanding pathologist posts. A surprise legacy enabled him to leave his humble occupation and to attend a secondary school. Later he became a science teacher. He saved enough money to study medicine at Edinburgh University, when he lived on ten shillings a week. His mother’s death led him to embark on the study of cancer.

The half-yearly meeting of the Loyal Greymouth Lodge M.U.1.0.0.F. was held last evening. N.G. Bro. W. G. Larcombe presiding over a good attendance of members.
