Dissociati-ug themselves from the Ministerial policy, as threatening Imperial security in India, and handicapping British trade in India and Burma, also disagreeing with the methods# applied to the housing pro blem in England, and other legislation,. for which they declare no mandate was given to the Government, five Conservative Commoners have informed the Government Whip that they will no longer support the Government. The quintette are the
Duchess of Atholl, Messrs Astbury, Nall and Thorp, and Colonel Todd. In response to ‘their protest. Mr Baldwin 4*tated that no assurance could be given of a modification of the Government policy. They must do what their conscience dictated, de- { spite the fact that their defection at the present juncture would be striking a blow at national unity. The members concerned answered that they were dissociating themselves from the Government’s policy on the ers mentioned, as contrary to the country’s, interests, thus enabling them unreservedly to pxprrsn tbeir opinion.
