Following the calling yesterday of tenders, a start will be made with the construction of the Waimakariri bridge at Bealey, as soon a<s possible. Tt is anticipated that it will be completed within nine months. The bridge will comprise n 0 spans of 44ft each and will be constructed of reinforced concrete piers and superstruc- ' hire. Fourteen-inch octagonal piles I will be used, and there will be three piles to each pier, with five piles at a passing place in the middle of the br'dge. The passing place will be the length of one span, and 18ft wide, ‘he adjoining spans being splaved *o a width of ten feet. A wooden hand rail will be provided. The materials used will comprise IfißSft of reinforced concrete piling, 679 cubic yards of concrete, and 60 tons of reinforcing steel. The bridge has been designed to carry six tons.
