Tony Canzoneri staged a sensational upset at Madison Square Garden night by regaining the lightweight championship through a clear-cut vic tory over Lou Ambers for fifteen rounds. The decisions of the referee and the two judges were unanimous for Canzoneri on points. The fighters weighed 133 and 133$ pounds respectively. Canzoneri lost the championship in 1933. The champion, Barney Ross, recently relinquished the crown, as he was overweight. Sporting opinion favoured Ambers, owing ..To his youth and hitting ability, but Canzoneri outboxed him throughout. He was on the verge of scoring a knock-out in the third round when he twice had Ambers on the floor.
