MEAT BATTLE
PARLEY ENDED. AUSTRALIA’S ACTION. (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, May 10. The Australian “Sun-Herald’’ News Service learns that the Commonwealth delegation sent a strong letter to the British Government in connection with the meat deadlock. The letter, which is in reply to the British proposals of May 3, says in effect that no useful purpose could be served by continuing the discussions. It is understood that the British attitude makes an agreement impossible. The British authorities want a combination of levy and restriction and the Commonwealth continues resolutely to oppose any form of restriction.
A meeting of the visiting Australian Ministers regarding meat considered the latest suggestion from the British Government, which, while indicating no substantial change in its attitude, at least provides scope for another An-glo-Australian Ministerial Conference, which is expected to be held on Monday, when, unless noteworthy progress is achieved, the hopes of any largescale agreement must dissolve. LONDON, May 10.
Several questions dealing with imperial defence were discussed at a meeting of Air. AlacDonald and the Dominions’ Prime Ministers, including many details referring to the Committee of Imperial Defence. The Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. R. B. Bennett, left for Canada to-day.
