WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Schoolboys’ Boxing: WESTPORT, May 10. The standard of boxing revealed last evening at the annual school tourney held in St. Canice’s Hall was an improvement on that of previous years and the fairly large attendance present enjoyed the bouts. Cooper and Lochhardt, two members of the Denniston team were unlucky in being asked to meet boys who held a big physical pull. The other members of the team, Ward and Anderson went a long way in the competition, the former being defeated in the final by McManus. St. Canice’s lads performed the best, winning all the major honours. At the conclusion of the tournament the trophies won were presented by Hon. Smith, Minister of Education who was accompanied by the Mayor (Mr Kilkenny) and Mr P. C. Webb, M.P. Both the Minister and the Member for the District were introduced by the Mayor, the weights being announced at list lOlbs each. A pair of i gloves were adjusted but the battle was postponed until November. Judg--1 ing by the “forward” condition of the contestants it was a wise move. The tournament was managed in a very capable manner and reflected much credit on the secretary and his able committee. Mr Al. B. Scully acted as announcer and the referees were Messrs O’Neill and Phibbs. The decisions were all well received with the exception of the final of the 6st 111 b to 7st 81b class, when a glaringly bad verdict was given to Walshe in his bout with Moynihan. The results were as follows—■lst 71b to sst 31b: First round—G. Hawes (State) beat E. Cooper (Denniston); O’Dea (St. Canice’s) beat Lochhardt (Denniston); J. Walsh (St. Canice) beat Bennett (State). Semi-finals

—Walsh beat O’Dea; G. Hawes beat J. Fox (Sergeant’s Hill). Final—Walsh beat Hawes.

sst .31b to Gst: W. Ward (Denniston) beat Fleming (State), T. Brown (St. Canice) beat AL Coyne (St. Canice), T. AD-Manus (St. Canice) beat T. Hansby (St. Canice), T. Anderson (Denniston) beat Hughes (St. Canice). Semi-finals— McManus beat T. Gray (St. Canice), Ward beat his team mate Anderson; W. Ward beat T. Brown. Final—McManus beat Ward.

Gst to Gst 111 b: Todd (State) beat Walsh (St. Canice), Prout (State) beat J. Barry (St. Canice), D. Moynihan (St. Canice) beat E. Prout (State). In the final Moynihan beat Todd. Gst 111 b to 7st 81b: P. Walshe (State) beat .Kearns (St. Canice), W. Moynihan (State) beat T. Boyd (State). Final—Walshe got a very doubtful decision over Moynihan. Special bouts between midgets Fox, Kearns, Marshall and Borlacc ended in draws. Death at Card Party: ’l'he death took place last evening with tragic suddenness of Mrs Ellen Craddock, aged 59 years, wife of Mr Arthur Craddock, Cape Line. Deceased, while attending a card party in the Friendly Societies’ Hall, suffered from a heart attack and expired almost immediately. Dr. Dickel was promptly in attendance, but could only pronounce life extinct. The late Mrs Craddock was a native of Westport ami was popularly known. She is survived by her husband, four sons, Fred, Arthur, Roy and Stan, all of Westport. also three daughters, Alesdames McLean, Prestige, of Westport, and V. Ilosking, of Opitiki. Mrs C. J. Wicks of West port, is a sister. The sympathy o| all will be extended to the relatives in their bereavement.

Hockey Season Opens: The weather was perfect yesterday for the opening of the hockey season, when two games were played. In the men’s game Wesley had matters mostly all their own way, defeating Westport by 8 goals to 1. Goals were scored for the winners by Smith (3), Coker (2), Gillovic, Naylor and Hodgson. Davies got Westport’s only goal. Althought the standard of hockey in the ladies’ match was typically ol ! the opening of the season character, the play was fast and interesting. The game ended in a draw, both sides scoring a goal. Airs Curtin netted for Westport and Miss Bird for Ramblers. Yesterday’s Basketball Results: The Buller competitions opened yesterday and games played, resulted as follows:— A GRADE. Rangers B drew with Tech. Old Girls B, 4 all. St.' Alary’s College A 14 beat Torea A 11. Af ay fair G beat Tech. High School 4. Ranger A 17 beat Aotea 8. Tech. Old Girls 12 beat St. Alary’s Old Girls 3. B GRADE. Tech. High School 9 beat St. Alary’s College B 5. Torea B 14 beat St. Andrew’s B 4. The following fixtures have been decided on on for Monday:— Rangers B v. St. Mary ’s Old Girls at G p.m. (Aliss AlcGovern); Tech. Old Girls A v. Aotea at 6.45 (Miss Findlay).

Technical High School: Air J. 11. Harkness was in the chair at the usual monthly meeting of the Board of Manager of the Technical School held last evening. It was decided that the Borough Council be asked for a grant towards the school jubilee celebrations. The meeting after considering a report on the grounds decided to ask the Minister of Education for a grant to complete top dressing, etc. Messrs Parfitt and Snodgrass were appointed a visiting committee. The Principal (Air Metson) reported as follows—The roll number is now 127

one boy has left to take an engineering position m Christchurch. The attendance has been good, and despite tho very broken term definite progress has been made by the pupils. Miss Blackmore, Dipl. H.Se., leaves this week, and her successor, Miss Allison Black, B H.Se., will commence her duties at the beginning of the second term, May Jubilee celebrations: The staff and pupils have taken an active part in the King s jubilee celebrations. All joined in the procession on Alay 6, and at night a very enjoyable fancy dress ball was held. On Alay 7 the Principal and Dr. Nicol gave addresses on various aspects of the event and this afternoon His Lordship the Bishop of Nelson gave an eloquent and most entertaining speech to pupils and friends. Tomorrow we are to ask the lion. Alinister of Education to plant a tree to be known as the jubilee tree. Two fine flag poles have been erected at tho front gates for the flags recently presented to the school by Airs 11. R. Young. In connection with the jubilee celebrations the Borough Council made a grant of £2O for local schools, but the money was allocated to the two primary schools only. The Education Department made a grant to all school children, primary, secondary and technical alike, and I can see no sound reason at all why the secondary school children in Westport should not have received a fair share of this local contribution. I think that the Council should be asked to remedy this injustice. The grounds are in good order although more top-dressing is needed. I regret to state that the caretaker has been seriously indisposed for the past three weeks, but Airs Currie with assistance has been carrying on the essential work in a thoroughly satisfactory manner. The following Board members are due to retire this year but are eligible for re-election: Messrs Bruning, Robertson, Hunter and Taylor. The school closes for term holidays on Friday Alay 10, and resumes on Afonday, Alay 27.

Shipping: The Karepo and Alfie Cam sailed yesterday. Gold Return: The Addison’s Flat Goldmining Co’s, return for the fortnight ending May 4 was 20oz for 30 shifts.
