RUNANGA NOTES

A social evening was tendered Mrs J. Armstrong by the congregation of the Presbyterian Church last evening, on the eve of the departure of Mr and Mrs Armstrong, who are leaving the district, after residing at Runanga for several years. The residents as a whole wish Mr and Mrs Armstrong many happy years in their retirement. Miss Betty Callanan is a patient at the Grey Hospital.

Mrs R. Scott, who is a patient at the Grey Hospital, is much improved in 1 ealt’h. Mrs and Miss S’imson have returned to Runanga after having attended the wedding of Mrs Simson’s daughter at Christchurch.

The annual meeting of the Runanga branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Plunket Rooms last evening. Mr R. McTaggart, Mayor, presided, and in the course of his remarks congratulated the various officers foi their interest displayed and the arduous work they had put into the movement. The seventh’annual report for the year ending 31st March, 1935, sub mitted by the Plunket Nurse (R. Rawlings,) was as follows:—We have great pleasure in submitting our report for the sear ending 31st March, 1935. It has been a year of great depression in the d’strict, and the one appeal we made to the public, namely, .the Plunket Ball met with very poor support. The rooms si ill continue to be popular, and we desire to thank Nurse Rawlings, also relieving Nurse Simpson, for their very efficient and helpful services. Wo regret to say that, during the year, Mrs Timlin, one of our vice-Presidents, suffered a very sad bereavement, and we extend to her our deepest sympathy. We also regret to say that Mrs King, our President, is not enjoying very good health at present, and we sincerely hope that her health and strength will greatly improve during the ensuing year. We would like more mothers, attending the rooms, to take an interest in the work, and help us by becoming members, or by giving a small donation. We wish to thank all committee members for their loyal support during the year, our auditor, Miss Richmond, and all those who, at any time, have come along and willingly helped us. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs King; VicePresidents. Mesdames Rae, and Timlin; Committee, Mesdames Armstrong Cooper, Swan, Pope and McGuigan; Hon. Treasurer, Mrs Farquhar; Hou. Auditor, Miss Richmond; Hon. Secretary, Mrs Dale. The list of members for 1934-35 was:—Mesdames Armstrong, Baxendale, Cooper, Dale, En nor, Ewan, Farquhar, Freeman, King, Patterson, Pope, Rae, Southward, Timlin, Thomson and Rae. The Nurse’s report for March, 1935 was as follows: No. of times branch visited 50; No. of visits to rooms, adults 681, babies 604; pre-school 196, total 1481; No. of visits to homes, new cases 26; old cases 252; total 278. No. of babies under supervision 52.; No. of pre-school 24; No. of new cases for the year 30. Runanga is visited weekly, home and office calls. The work of the Society goes on steadily. This year the electric light and heater point have been installed, and should be a great benefit in the winter months.
