Sayegh (L.) 18.773, E. J. Phelan (L.) 17,597, J. B. Donald (Citizens) 16 233, Hon. T. Blodworth 14,348. Suburbs: Hendry Luke, M. H. Wynyard. AV. B. Darlow, T. A. Bishop, R. T. Reid, A. S. Sutherland. Mackenzie and Harvey Turner, while A. J. Parker was recently appointed a Government nominee.

The vigilance exercised by a large number of detectives and uniformed officers during the progress of voting in the municipal elections, resulted in the taking of names of persons who were distributing printed cards, bearing the names of candidates. While police officials said subsequently that they could not reveal whether any prosecutions were contemplated, it was admitted ’that the purpose of the action at the booths was to emphasise the law regarding interference with electors, at or on their way to the booths. The activity of the police was disconcerting to many of those who were requested to supply their names. It was apparent that very few were acquainted with the law in question. The provision states that every person is liable to a fine not exceeding £26. who, at an election, in any way interferes wim any elector, either in the polling booth, or on his way there, wijh the intention of influencing him, or advising him as to his vote.

It was stated by the police that reports from various officers would have to be awaited before any estimate of the number of names taken could be made. LABOUR GAINS AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, ’May 9. As was generally expected. Mr JKilkenny maintained his high position in public confidence by being re-elect-ed Mayor of Westport for the next three years by a substantial majority. Mr Kilkenny has worked assiduously in the interests of the town during his term of office and in appointing him again the electors have shown recognition of his qualities for the job and of the good work he has accomplished in the past. The defeat of Mr W. Caldwell for the Hospital Board and Council, after serving on both bodies with distinction for 15 years, came as a, surprise. Mrs Ryan polled exceedingly well for the Hospital Board, bur was"not elected. The results from the 30 booths for the County elections came to hand promptly and were effectively handled by Mr Schadick and his staff at the Westport office. The same cannot be said of the Borough arrangements, where only three booths had to be contended with. It was close on 2 a.m.. when the figures from the booth at Bailie’s Building were available oi just on seyen hours after the poll closed. The new Borough Council now consists of J. M. Robertson, J. Bird, O. L. Nahr. G. Taylor. E. R. Fox, M. O’Dea. C. Thomas, J. Radford and J. Stowell. The Medical Association nominees for the Hospital Board and Council were eliminated, though Mr Clark, for the Waimangaroa Riding was only defeat ed by Mr Hawes by nine votes.
