(Our Own Correspondent. 1 ) REEFTON, May 9. Un the election of members iof the C.iuntv Council, little interest was displayed' bv ratepayers. The election for the Reefton Riding resulted m the return of Mr ('. W. Archer and Mr I’. rfeawiight by substantial majorities over the sitting memebrs Messrs D. I’anckhursl and J. B. Auld. The electmn for Antonio’-. Riding was fairlx <'ose, Messrs Clayton and Melnroe defeating Mr Teasdale. When the County poll was declared at Reefton Messrs Archer, Seawright and Au'd addressed the assembled people. The successful candidates re •urned thanks for their election. Mr Auld also itlmnked his supporters and congratulated Messrs Archer and Seawright on their election. Be said the Council had kept tho rates down to the I west possible rate, so that the. Imangahmi County was the lowest rated in the Dominion, while the were, in odder. He trusted the ratepayers would find the newly-elected Councillors capable men. He hud sat on the Hospital Board with both and knew their worth.

LT. AVicken has received news of the death at Christchurch of Mr Eward, a miner well-known in AVaiuta. He arrived from the Old Country a few years ago, and was engaged at ‘the Blackwater Mine, where he contracted miners’ phthisis. He was sent to Christchurch for treatment, but without avail.

Word was received in IBeefton today of the death at Blenheim of Mr John Humphrey, formerly a wellknown resident here. He worked in ■the mines for many years, and suffered consequently from miners’ phthisis. He was predeceased by his wife eight or ten years ago, and leaves a grlown-up family of three children Messrs Neville and 'Leonard Humphrey (Blenheim) and Mrs J. Panekhurst (Reefton). Deceased. was a native of Australia, and was aged about 65. The remains wi’l be brought to Reef'ton for interment. Mr K. J. Holyoake, Member for the District, arrived in Reef ton yesterday, meeting the Minister of Education today. He will visit- the Maruia on Friday, and on Saturday morning joins the Minister at Tnangahua Junction to go through the Murchison district and the Howard Goldfields. Mr Holyoake has been elected a vice-President of the New Zealand Rugbv Union and President of 'the Motu'eka-Golden Day Rugby Union, lie had previously been President of Motueka Sub-Union.
