RUSSIAN WOMEN
Emigres to China their morality questioned. (Received May 9. 10.20 p.m.) SHANGHAI, May 9. 'l’he Russian community here an* incensed at a League of Nations’ report. which stales that out of ten housand Russian women in Shanghai of whom 7200 are beliween the ages of sixteen and forty-five, at least twenty-two per cent, of th e latter are women of ill-fame.
Further fuel T s aJTled to the fire by the statement of Rev. Father Robert, a head of Catholic missions in China, before, the League of Nations Committee, that out, of the twenty thousand Russian women who are residing in his territory, from three thousand to six thousand are prostitutes. Various Russian societies in Shanghai, Tientsin, Harbin and Mukden are sending a joint protest to the League denying the reports a s being a wholesale slander, and declaring that while Russian emigres have had a full share of misfortunes, the majority of the women have stoically resisted immoral means of fretting a livelihood.
