LONDON, May 8. The Chester Cup resulted: Damascus 1, Cecil 2, Jack Tar 3. Seventeen siarted. Won by a length; a. head between second and third. (Received May 9. al 10.10 p.m.) ‘ SYDNEY, May 9. For the James Barnes Plate, there are twelve acceptors, including Whittingham and .Journal (top weights) 9.0, and Persian S.lO. There are thirteen acceptors lor the Flying Handicap, Silver Jubilee being top weight with 9.0, and High S.B. Racing News ITEMS OF INTEREST. (By the Del ver.) Long Overdue. It is a. long lane that has no turning. and Sundancer’s success at Hokitika last Monday was well received. Mr. T. E. Coates, the popular president of the Grey mouth Jockey Club. has raced several horses during the past few seasons without getting a share of the stakes, but in the daughter of Stardancer he looks like winning further laurels on the Coast circuits. Good Racing. J. S. Shaw has put up rather an attractive record during the recent Coast circuit, and by excellent judgment in placing his horses he won eight events with his two gallopers, Bella Rosa and Royal Gallant. The effort of the latter in winning the Royal Handicap last Monday was very pleasing and it seems that the Top Gallant gelding will win in better company during the winter months.

Unfortunate Mishap. Although Palmary is improving with every outing, his win was made easier by Lycidus slipping and falling in the flat in the hurdles at Dunedin last Monday. The latter was going very well, in behind the field and at the turn he joined the leaders and looked all over a winner when he came down. The winner got a lucky run on the rails at this stage eventually winning easily. Lycidus’s turn is not far off and lie must be kept in mind for events in the immediate future. A Poor Lot.

The steeplechasers seen out at Wingatui last Monday were a very moderate lot and the veteron Umtali, beat the field pointless. Some excuse may be made for Mcmbo, who is, evidently not ready, but the Riccarton representative, Royal Liniond, sadly disappointed his large army of backers and on his showing will have to improvs greatly to pay his way in the company he will meet as the jumping season advances. A Good Mudlark. Travenna, by his attractive win at Dunedin, looks like a good one to follow'" during the winter months. The younger full brother to Ventrae raced prominently last winter, incidentally paying a large dividend at Riccarton at the National meeting. This gelding who is by Tractor from Ravenna, is a very speedy sprinter and the way he finished on over the seven furlongs suggests him as a very likely sort for the Winter Cup in August. Not Outstanding.

The cross-country horses so far seen in action this season do not look very encouraging and it seems there is going to be a shortage of good class performers. None of the jumpers seen at Egmont were impressive, but the dual winner, Transact and Riotous are capable of much improvement as the season advances.
