(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, May 8. The Westland Competitions open at •he Princess Theatre to-morrow night at 8 o’clock, and will be continue! during the week at the Theatre and All jSaiii.h’ Hall. Tn; judges ate Miss E. The following was the programme: Overture, Boss Orchestra; song, Mr J. Bridgman and Boy Scouts; nursery rhymes in character, infants} violin solo, Airs K. McKay; skaters’ dance, Convent pupils; soiig. Miss Joy Bridgman; Irish Jig, junior Institute members; choral items, State School choir; song in character, Al. McKay. M. Blacklow, J. Manera and T. Minehan; playette, Scouts; song. Mr C. Martin; overture, Boss Orchestra; play, Institute Drama Circle; song, Air J. Bridgman; pianoforte duet, Mr and Airs Alartin; cornet solo, Jas. Ablesou; song and tap dance. Mi's Ableson and Institute members.

On Friday afternoon after the parade has marched to the Square am? the speeches have been made, a sports programme for the children will be run off. A sum of money has been generously donated for the occasion by the Borough Council and Harbour Board, and this will be distributed as prize money. Every child will be able to participate, since there will be separate races for boys and girls of every age. These events will be open to all children in attendance at the local State and Convent Schools. One event designed to encourage those who have recently shown interest; in training and athletics will be a sprint of 100 yards, for which an increased prize will bo given.

Under ideal weather conditions, polling in connection with the halfholiday and municipal and County elections took place to-day, the booths being at the Town Hall, St. Andrew’s Hall and the County Chambers. About 20 members of the Hokitika Girl Guides, with their officers, held a jamboree across the river yesterday afternoon. Tea was prepared in the open, each patrol cooking it o(wn and much originality was shown. The troops returned at about 8 p.m. after a pleasant outing. The monthly meeting of the Arahura Maori Pah branch of the Women’s Institute was presided over by Airs Tainui, there being a full attend-

ance. Mrs T. Tainui presided at the piano, and singing was led by Airs O. Mason. A cooking competition was won by Airs Tainui senr., Airs Smyth being ocond. The judge was Airs J. Coulson, of Kaihinn. A Dnng-and-buy stall did good business. Aliss F. Aluir and Airs Hamilton received prizes for the most points gained last year. At the monthly meeting of the Koiterangi Institute Airs Harcourt presided over a fair attendance. Mrs Slewart,. President of the West Coast Federation, gave an address on the Institute. A debate. “ Should Men Help in the House” caused much amusement. A competition, “The Best Programme” was won by Airs Harcourt, Airs Boddington being second, and Airs W. Havill third. The hos 4 ,esses for the evening were Alesdames Fleming. Cropper and Misses V. Smith and T. Fleming. The junior Rugby fixtures for Saturday will be a.s follows: Kiwi v. nO.ss at Cass Square; Rovers v. Kokatahi at Kokttahi; School v. Arahura at Arahura. A glorious panoramic view of the Southern Alps was obtained to-day, every contour of the mountains in their winter habit being plainly visible. Aft. Tasman and Alt. Cook were remarkably prominent.
