The following report was presented at this week’s meeting of the Borough Council by the Engineer (Mr A. J. Fairmaid): — The scarifying and making up of Guinness Street to the required crossfall has been completed between Boundary and Herbert Streets, and the section between Herbert and Tarapuhi Streets is in hand'and nearing completion. Winnie Street and Kilgour Road from Winnie Street to Perotti Street have been prepared for tar-sealing and the first coat will be applied as soon as the weather is suitable. The kerbing and channelling of Alexander Street between Thompson and Shakespeare Streets has been completed and the footpaths have been formed in conformity threwith, except in that portion on the eastern side, where the footpath crosses the Town Belt North. Kerb!ng and channelling is now in hand on the eastern side of Shakespeare Street from Kilgour Road northwards. The formation of Byron Street southwards from Nelson Street is practically complete except for the asphalting of footpaths. A partially collapsed manhole on the sewer in Ashton Lane has been rebuilt. The manhole at the intersection of Gresson and Johnston Streets is in course of enlargement and rebuilding with the object of facilitating the getaway of storm water in •he sewer which drains the Leonard Street area and thus modifying the Hooding which periodically occurs there. In Blackmore Street a stone filled cut off trench has been put down and a pipe taken therefrom to thsewer, the desired result, namely the overflow of storm water, having been

overcome thereby sc- far as observation to date has shown. The Reservoir has been kept full with an average daily pump of 9.4 hours. WORKS COMMITTEE REPORT. CT. Williams (Chairman of Works Committee) reported:— Your Committee met on Wednesday: present, Crs. Williams (Chairman), McGin ’ey, McCarthy and Boustridge. Visits were paid as follows: Damaged storm water sewer through Mr Drake’s property, Alexander Street; Black more Street extension; Marlborough Street; Byron Street; Swift Street; Sturge Street; Cardwell Street; ami the recommendations are as follows: That the Council proceed with the repair of the storm water sewer through Mr Drake’s property. Alexander Street. That a catch water drain be put in on the western side of Spring Street, south Blackmore Street extensio n to lead the surface and underground water flow from the guilty south of the inlet and of the Blackmore Street sewer into that sewer, the estimated cost being £ 15. Also that the laying of gas and water mains in Blackmore Street extension be proceeded with.' the water main to bp 4in cast iron pipe commencing al the southern end of the existing main in Blackmore Street, the estimated cost of th? water pipes being .£55 ex-Xew Zealand stocks. However, if the Council would accept one of the tenders recently submitted for 4in east iron pipe the cost of pipe for this job would be reduced by £lO. The tender!’ mitted on the basis of the supply of 3000 feet of pipe and fittings at a cost of £385. That a 9in pipe be led across Marlborough Street in continuation of the Ida Street open drain in order to provide for the drainage of

the southern side of Marlboroug Street.
