Croydon, the Premier of New South Wales, Mr B. B. Stevens, dwelt at length on what he'termed a gratifying transformation in the business, industrial and rural life of the Stalo since his Government took over from the Lang regime three years ago. when the aggregate deficit was £22,890.01)0. This, said the Premier, had been reduced to less than £3,000,000, while taxation, other charges, and financial burdens had been reduced by twelve and a-half millions. Still a greater achievement was the expenditure by the {Government in the past three years of twenty-six millions on public, works, and a reduction in unemployment to manageable proportions. Mr Stevens declared the Government's policy for the future, as in the past, be directed to the development of State resources; a continuation of water conservation. power and irrigation schemes; the helping of farmers to grow crops or raise stock along scientific lines; co-operating with the Commonwealth Government, in exploring the avenues of profitable export; providing machinery for a Federal compulsory pool as desired by wheatgrowers: affording relief to necessitous farmers; setting up better organisation for the fruit industry, and development of mineral resources. All possible facilities, he said, would be given for private enterprise to create big industrial undertakings. Due protection would be afforded bona fide unionists against any form of exploitation. The Government, if returned, would maintain, or extend, all existing social services. It would also examine schemes for unemployment insurance. An adequate network of aerodromes would be provided for the development of air transport. Regarding the chain store system of trading, which had come under rievew, the Government woulld 'take appropriate* action if the results of its investigation warranted it.
