GREY VALLEY MINERS

THE RELIEF WORK. Regarding the Dobson and Wallsend miners, Mr W. Purdy (President of the Grey Valley Miners’ Union) last evening stated: “The Labour De partment, Greynrouth, have, advised that the lists have not yet been compiled showing the amount to which the miners employed at Dobson and Wallsend mines are entitled, under the intermittent employment scheme, but, realising as they do the urgency of granting immediate relief. they have decided to pay one pound to each person entitled to relief This payment the Department desire to make at the end of the current week. The men are still more desirous that the payment should be made at the earnest possible date. When the lists are completed, the actual time to which the men are entitled will be worked upon days when the mines are idle. Will these men who have been dismissed at Wallsend mine and have not yet registered please do so at once? It is in their own interests that they do so. This includes single men. Married men dismissed at Wallsend and residing in Greymouth, who registered, should call at the Greymouth Office, when they will receive an immediate payment. The Labour Department officials, Messrs Beauford. Jackson and Hopper, are doing all they can to assist us during the present crisis. Our local M’s.P., Messrs Webb and O’Brien, are keeping in close touch with the situation, aud if is only fair to state that if it had not been for their efforts, no relief would have been forthcoming.”
