(Our Own Correspondent). REEFTON, December 31. A light shower fell pn Saturday night, and rain was reported both on Saturday and Sunday {from Black’s Point, Golden Point, Saddle Hill, and Maruia reported a two hours’ fall, but to date the town has not enjoyed a fall sufficient enough to lay the dust. Reefton would welcome a good downpour*of rain as a New Year’s gift. Chi Sunday afternoon some sparks from a burning stump set alight blackberry and broom bushes in a paddock next to the house of the Clerk of the Court in Bridge Street, and the wind

carried the flames towards the house. The firebell at the Central Station gave the alarm and the firemen ran out one lead of horse and quickly subdued the blaze. A cricket match of considerable interest took place on the Racecourse on Sunday, ami after an enjoyable game the ladies proved the winners. The Reefton Boy Scouts have gone into camp at the Inangahua Landing for one week, and are under the care of Scoutmaster Switzer.

On Thursday evening a very enjoyable time was spent at the residence of Mr F. Cate, on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. Games, items and competitions were won by Mrs Lawry and Mr Cate junr. Items were given by Mr Hugh Smith (recitations), Mr G. McGloughlin (songs), Mr J. McGloughlin (recitations), Mr Manson (ventriloquial), Mr Coxall (recitation), Mrs Cockrane (songs). The party ended with the guests singing “He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” and wishing Mr Cate the best of health for many years to come. Those present were Air and Mrs Cate, Air and Mrs Cleaver, Air and Mrs Duff, Mr and Mrs Coxall, Afr and Airs Lawry, Air and Airs Hardy, Mr and Airs H.
