WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.j. Labour Matters: WESTPORT, January 1. Mi W. 11. Woodcock was in the chair at the usual weekly meeting of the local branch of the New Zealand Labour Parly. It was agreed to hold a special meeting on Sunday, January 13, at which remits for the annual conference of the Party will be discussed. After routine matters had beep dealt with and the Chairman had extended his wishes to all for. a prosperous New Year, the meeting terminated. Mr P. C. Webb arrived from Greymouth after the meeting, and reviewed interestingly all he hao seen at Hokitika. He was much impressed with the organisation of the celebrations, especially the procession. It was a wonderful success and the arrangements reflected the greatest, credit on all concerned. Athletics and Cycling:

The visiting Sydenham athletes had a try-out On Victoria Square on Saturday. when a sports meeting was conducted under the auspices of rhe West port Club. The visitors were not very successful, but impressed, and will undoubtedly figure more prominently to-morrow. The results were as follows: — Ladies' 75 yards handicap: G. Shaw 3yds 1. .1. Band Recital: Under the uonductorship of Mr Mara, the Municipal Band gave a recital at the Rotunda on Victoria Square. There was a largo attendance of the public, and the music was much enjoyed.
