Miss Kathleen Anderson, Ashburton, is visiting her sister, Mrs A. Lane. Mr E. M. Sheedy arrived by yesterday’s express from Christchurch. Mr C. Williams, formerly of the Railway Department, Greymouth, and / now of the Treasury staff, is visiting Greymouth. Dr. P. F. McEvedy, accompanied by Mrs and the Misses McEvedy, return to New Zealand to-day by the Akaroa, after an extensive holiday trip abroad. Rear Admiral Geoffrey Blake, has been appointed to command from July Ist next, the cruiser squadron, which the Australia will join in the Mediterranean. Miss Betty Clasper, of Greymouth, is spending the holidays with her grandparents, Mr and Mrs Dempster, of the Jackson’s Hotel, while Miss Peggy Clasper is on a visit to Mr and Mrs J. Leiteh, of Christchurch. Among the passengers by yesterday’s express to Christchurch were Mrs T. A. W. Tate, Miss A. Radcliffe (Runanga), Mr Stan Smith, Mi' T. King (Runanga), Mrs D. Panckhurst (Reefton), and Mr J. H. E. Schroder (on return to Christchurch). The funeral of the late Michael O’Brien, of Nelson Creek, took place yesterday afternoon at Karoro cemetery. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St." Patrick’s Church, in the morning, by Rev. Father Gregory, who also conducted the service at the graveside.

The death occurred yesterday, at the residence of Mrs <T. Baty, Coal Creek, of Miss Maria Lyes. Deceased, who was a native of London, came to New Zealand thirty-four years ago, residing first at Christchurch, and coming to Coal Creek twenty years ago. Her brother John, with formerly resided. predeceased her four years ago. She had been in ill health for the past year. She is survived by two brothers in U.S.A., and relations on the West Coast. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon, leaving Mr J. Baty’s residence for Karoro Cemetery.

Miss Nellie M. Scanlon, the New Zealand writer, who is now in London, is closely engaged on another novel, which will be ready for the spring publication —an important period in the programme of English publishers. The title is to be an arresting one, “Ambition’s Harvest.” The story begins in New Zealand and then moves to various ptuws of the world—like the writer herself. Five thousand copies of “Winds of Heaven” have been sold and another issue similar in size will shortly be ready. The book has gone very well in New Zealand. Readers generally are desirous of having the *’Pencarrow” series complete.

Dr. Guy H. Scholefield, the Chief Parliamentary Librarian, has been offered a Carnegie visiting grant, which will provide expenses for a. trip for him of a year to the United States, England, and Europe, where he will study library methods. Nothing definite has yet been arranged, but Dr. Scholefield,’ who is spending a holiday at Lake Tekapo, said yesterday that he hoped to go some time early next year. His place at the Parliamentary Library will be taken by Mr W. S. Wauchop, Assistant Librarian, who will return shortly from a year’s leave which he has spent abroad in studying libraries. —Press Assn.

The marriage took place on Wednesday morning at St. Thomas’s Church, Runanga, of Ellen, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs R. G. Hewison, Dunollie, to John, third son of Mr and Mrs J. Tailentire, Runanga. The Rev. Marks officiated, and Mrs F. J. Smith, Runanga, presided at the organ. The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a charming frock of ivory crinkle crepe, made on slim fitting lines, and falling in a long train at the back. Her veil of fine tulle fell in folds, from a cap of lace, finished with orange blossom at the sides. She carried a shower bouquet of lilies and carnations. She was attended by her sister, Miss Ada Hewison, as bridesmaid, and Miss Heather Hewison (cousin of the bride) as flower girl, both wearing ankle length frocks of pink Matalassie, with hat and shoes to tone, and carrying bouquets of pink and white earnations and sweet peas. Mr Harold Tallentire, brother of the bridegroom, attended him as best man. The bride’s mother received her guests at Herb. Moore’s, wearing a brown floral dress of crepe de ehine, with hat and shoes to tone. The happy couple later left for Christchurch, the bride wearing a black tailored costume, with a white crepe de ehine blouse and hat and shoes to tone.
