Mrs F. M. Dennehy returned on Saturday from a cisit to Christchurch. Rev. Father J. McSherry, S.M., left Saturday on return to Otaki. Messrs C. Williams and T. Donovan will leave to-morrow on a visit to Sydney. Mr W. Turner, Railway Guard. Christchurch, has been transferred to Greymouth. Mr J. W. Souter, Christchurch, is visiting Greymouth, and returns this evening. Mrs J. F. Kelly, who has been visiting Greymouth, leaves to-night on return to Christchurch. Messrs J. O’Brien, M.P. for West land, and P. C. Webb, M.P. for Buller, arrived on Saturday from Wellington. Detective-Sergeant T. E. Holmes re turned on Saturday from a visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs A. P. Watson, of Reefton, were week-end visitors to Christchurch. Mr Constable, of the Reefton Post and Telegraph office staff, left on Saturday for Christchurch to spend the week-end with relatives.

Mr Monty Johnston, of Christchurch, is spending a short holiday at Boddytown, and is the guest of Mr and Mrs Kilpatrick.

Mr J. K. Connel (Grey delegate) and Mr J. Whittle (Buller delegate) left on Saturday to attend a meeting of the National Miners’ Council, at Wellington.

Mrs W. Rafferty, of Runanga, who has been an inmate of Ngarana Hospital for the past two weeks, has made a good recovery, and expects to be discharged to-morrow.

Mr T. M. Stanton has been appointed structural engineering assistant to the Christchurch City Council, and Mr L. A. Cade assistant-building inspector.

Mr Jules Gebbie, of the local P. and T. staff, who has been promoted to Wellington, spent the week-end at Reefton with his parents prior to his departure for Wellington to-morrow.

The friends of Mr and Mrs Jas. P. Burrows, of Ahaura, will regret to learn of the death of their young son, Mervyn James, aged three years, which occurred at the Hospital yesterday morning. The child had been ailing for two weeks past.

Miss D. S. Dixon, head-teacher of the Ngahere School, is retiring from the profession, after lengthy service. In accepting her resignation, the Canterbury Education Board decided to forward Miss Dixon a letter of appreciation of her efficient service.

The death is announced from Riverton of Mr James Oliver Hymers, aged 79 years, a well-known horse trainer. He took a prominent part in the affairs of the town, and was a member of the borough council, and chairman of its works committee for a long period.

The funeral of the late Mr James Ward, of Ahaura, took place at Karoro cemetery yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended. The service at deceased’s late residence and at the graveside were road by Rev. W. A. Beaumont. Members of the Druids’ Lodge attended in large numbers, the service being read by ArchDruid Bro. Clark, of Taylorville.

The death occurred on Saturday at Christchurch of Mr Cotterill, formerly manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Christchurch. He joined the service at Napier in 1882, and later was stationed at several branches. He was manager first at Feilding, then at Timaru, and at Napier, and was appointed to Christchurch in 1928. lie retired in May, 1930.—Press Assn.

The death has occurred at Berlin of Field Marshal Von Knack, Commander of the German First Army during the Great War. A Westphalian by birth, he served as a subaltern in the war with Austria, and was wounded at Metz in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. He was regarded as one of the best infantry leaders in the army, and at the age of fifty-eight commanded an army corps of the six armies which invaded France in 1914.
