WAIUTA NOTES.

The many friends of Mrs M. Dean, heard with sincere regret of her death which occurred at an early hour on Sunday morning at the residence of her sou Mr F. Dean. Deceased who had been in ill health for some nronths was 70 years of age, and was a native of Detrain. Tasmania. She had been in Now Zealand 30 years most of which time was spent at. Globe Hili and TTaiuta, where she made many friends. Her husband, pre-deceased b<er some isix-yearns leaves three daughters, Mrs McDonald (Hector), Mr s Marshall (Christ church). Mrs Ch Burley (Greymouth', and two sons, Fred (Waiuta) and Wil liam (Hokitika) to mourn her loss. Io them is extended the sincere sympathy of the community. The funeral took place at Reel ton on Tuesday morning at the Suburban Cemetery, a large number of friends ‘attending. Rev. \\. Bell conducted the service at the graveside. Mrs 11. Newcombe (Maruia i, and Mrs Bert Bannon (Blackwater) paid a brief visit to the township during the week-end. Mr F. Kerridge spent a few days in Greymouth during the past week. Mr A. W. Hart (Postmaster) has left for Melbourne to attend the Centenary celebration. Among the guests at the Empire Hotel are:—Mr and Alls Bert Phare (Auckland), Miss Murphy (Kumara). Miss /kidridge (Greymouth), Mr T. Dooan (Wellington), and Mr H. Rurn s (Hokitika). A special general meeting of the M aiuta Miners’ Medical Association will be held in the Miners' Hull on Sunday morning at 10.30 a.m. As the business is of vital importance to all members a full attendance is requested. Owing t'O unfavourable weather the combined opening of the Waiuta Cricket Club and Tennis Club was postponed from last Sunday. The weather is still very unsettled, in the event of a line d'ay the opening wnl take place on Sunday. Messrs G. 11. Wi.liams, s. Blight, and E. Tarkington leave by this morning’s express on a brief visit to Christchurch. Mr Tom Moyle who has *cen undergoing medical treatment in Christchurch has returned, and is now abb? to resume work. Mr Keith Kent, who has been visiting the North Island has returned. A pleasant evening was spent in

the sample rooms on Monday even ing, when Mr and Airs Don Cameron entertained a number ■of friends, the occasion being to celebrate the 21st birthday of their daughter Kathleen. The evening was spent in dancing games and vocal’ and musical items. Musical items ivvere contributed by:— Airs R. Taylor. ALiss Aklridge, Messrs D. Stewart H. Dodds and T. Howard Vocal items by:—Airs Taylor Miss D. White. Messrs L. Harvey. B. Phare. 11. Burns, E. Wallenburg. P. Tighe, 11. N’utsford and J. E-.itwell Air ii Burns also gave an exhibition of tap dancing. A beautifully decorated cake, the work of Airs Fred Rose, was cut by Aliss Cameron, at a sumptuous repast, to which SO guests sat down. Air J. Rodden who presided proposed the Voasf of Aliss Caine: on; and on behalf of those present wished her many happy recollections of attaining her majority. All’s Cameron then presented her daughter with a gold key. Mr Bert Phare responded on behalf of Aliss Cameron and her parents. A very enjoyable evening terminated with the singing of ‘‘Auld Dang Syne.’’ Mrs TTamps'on (sear.), Reef’.on is spending a holiday here as the guest of Mrs D. Cameron. Residents will be interested to know that Air Gordon Ward, has commenced an up-to-date taxi service in uta. With a modern t'axi. moderate charges and careful driving, Mr AVard hopes to merit a fair share of public patronage.
