Mr Nicol, with the object ui gaining his degree of Doctor of Literature, studied Greek. He wrote, to secure this additional honour, a thesis on a disputed passage in Thucydides. He began his thesis in December 1932, went Home in 1933, ami completed his work in January of this year. Labour Day Carnival: The arrangements fo r the monster ports carnival to be. held on Labour Da v on Victoria Square, have been completed and all indications point to a great gathering. As the proceeds t will he devefted to erecting a perman- i ent memorial in Westport to the late Mr 11. E. Holland, the carnival i s deserving of :tll public support possible. Patrons will be given the opportunity of seeing the cream of Coast axemen in action. Other attractions will include an exhibition of gymnastics by the local club. Running. jumping, cycling, dancing. etc-, etc. The ladies’ committee will conduqt. a carnival dance in the evening at the Friendly Societies’ Hall. Novelties galore will figure on the programme and a great night’s enjoyment is assured. The whole dav should prove a memorable, one and the purpose underlying the attractions is one which should interest the generous- support of al! Shipping: Owing to stress of weather the arrival of the Fairburn is delayed Technical High School: Air J. H. Harkness was in the chair at the monthly, meeting of tthe Board of Managers of the Westport Technical High School. Mr F. Lowden, who will represent the Coa>l, Gold and Shale Workers’ Association at ;l conference to be held at Wellington, on Labour Day is a visitor to Westport. On arrival ait Wellington he was notified that the conference arranged to open on the 17th insit. had been postponed to the 22nd. This gave him time for a run to Westport to see old friends. He leaves to-morrow morning for Wellington. Athletics: Owing to a misunderstanding among the competitors as to the postponement of the sports meeting last evening, only a few turned up. As there was quite a fair number of spectators present, the commitltee put on three scratch races l , which resulted as follows; Mile cycle, S. Johnston 1. A. Caldwell 2. W Watt 3. The one and n-half mile cycle was won b v Watt, with G. Bhimhardt 2 and A. Caldwell 3. The 75yds handicap was won by D. Hardie, with T. O’Gorman 2, and 11. Twamley 3.
