Chaos in Streets
GREAT TRAFFIC JAM. MELBOURNE. October 19. Unprecedented chaos occurred in the city area, last night, after the fireworks display. It is estimated that 150,000 watched the display, and all wanted to go home at tho same time thousands of motor-ears became hopelessly jammed at the inlets and out lets «of the city. Those within the city area were unable to move for hours The police used loud-speakers to assist directing the traffic. Pedestrians making for the railways stations were marooned for long periods on the footjwayis, and were unable to cross the roads.
The railways estimated that a million persons travelled on the trains yesterday.
