PURSUIT OF MAORI

ON MAIN TRUNK Rangitoto Murders (Per Press A-social ion.) TE KUTTT, October 19. Tn connection with the Rangitoto tragedy, the police arc now following the movements of a young Maori, who boarded a train at Kiokio, six miles north of Otorohanga, on the evening of Thursday, 11th inst. This Maori first went to Otorohanga, being perhaps in the hope of boarding the Limited express, which, however, did not stop there. The Maori then walked to Kiokio, where he caught a goods train. He was at Otorohanga before daylight, and he asked the surfaceman when they came on duty, about the trains. This information was only given to the police vesterdav.

The man, who answered to the description of the missing Maori, Ilona, has been traced to Frankton, where he purchased a complete outfit from i hat to canvas shoes. He had a roll of notes in his possession at the time. Apparently the man was making north, and his description was broadcast to-night. The police cannot penetrate far into the bush at the scene of the tragedy on account of wet weather.

Five more police from Auckland will go to the scene to-morrow, as, even if the man was arrested in the north, there is a missing rifle with a drawn bolt, which will be an important piece of evidence.
