New members nominated were Messrs Blake, Fiddler, Watkins. Jr.rvi’ and Tobin. A motion that, the Management Committee consider ways and means of raising funds was carried also that a vote of thanks be to the ladies’ Committee for the excellent services rendered and that they be written a letter of thanks individually. It was decided that the opening day

be .the first Sunday in October lor the, purpose of grading and selecting the teams and that the Club nominate two senior teams and a third grade team, also a Saturday team if a competition is arranged. -X. discussion took place on a proposal to alter the hours of play from 11 a.m., to 6 p.m., but members considered that the disadvantage far outweighed any possible advantage. The Secretary’s (Mr C. J. Dewar) report was as .follows:— During the past season several very fine individual efforts were made by many of the Club members, and towards the end of the season both teams were fairly strong, and the Saturday team did very well, although members of the Saturday team were only those who were available from week to week and I don’t think the same team took the field two weeks in succession. The third grade team did well in the early part of the season, but due to irregular turn-out of players, fell away at times. Several third graders were eventually promoted to the senior teams and acquitted themselves well in the higher grade. The main difficulty experienced by the Club was the providing of sufficient practice bats owing to the amount of practice done and the nature of some of that practice, and we have to thank Mr G. Knapp for the amount of work done to keep the bats in order during the season. A tendency of the members to obtain their own private bats, will, I hope, ease the Club’s burden as the amount of finance is limited. Material other than bats is in good order and fair supply. The A team in the senior competition qualified in the first four to play for the Feary Cup, and although unsuccessful, they made their presence felt. The B team qualified in the last four and played in the Wingham Shield competition and after winning the local final, defeated Bell

Hill in the grand final and so hold the Shield. About twelve of the Club members took part in representative matches with more or less success against Reef ton, Hokitika and Buller. During the year the Club and cricket lost a great friend in Dr. Jim Brearty. who was a honorary vice-pre-sident of our Club. The Chib’s sympathy was also extended to Mr Alan Walton in his loss. During the season the only attempt to raise money was by the ladies’ committee, who ran a dance, which showed a small profit and our thanks are due for their assistance, both for their effort and their help with afternoon tea. As a small recognition, the Club entertained the ladies to a trip to Bell Hill on the occasion of the B competition final. As you will see, the only income during last year was afternoon tea collections, members’ subs.. Patron, vicePresi.lents’ and residents’ subs, and a dance: the result is that the season used up about £lO of last year’s credit balance and although we still can show a credit it behoves all members to dealise their obligations and help the Club to maintain its prestige, both on the field and in its business and financial obligations. Tn conclusion I wish to tender my resignation as Club. Hon. Secretary, as I feel that I have done my share during the last six seasons, and it requires a more youthful, energetic and enthusiastic member to hold the position, and one who is more in touch with members and can give more time to it than I am now able to do. T wish to thank all those who have helped to make the office a pleasurable one and helped to keep the Club in its proud position, which it always held. We owe no one anv debt for any season gone by, other than debts of gratitude, mainly to the Press for’favours done to our game and our Club and to Mr Barlow for the unremitting work done in providing excellent wickets and carrying out his exacting job as Club jCaptain.
