ASHBURTON R.C. Southern Circuit Begins (By the Delver). The Spring racing circuit, is further advanced to-day when the Ashburton County Racing* (flub holds its one-day spring meeting. Excellent response has been accorded Ihe club by owners and trainers, then* being 126 acceptors for the seven races carded. Although, there are only seven races on the programme, there will be actually eight events, (lie Novice Slakes being run in two divisions owing io the acceptances exceeding the safety limit. With their usual enterprise to cater well for the supporters of the club, the committee met on Wednesday and decided to double the stake with the result, that each of the placed horses in each division will receive the full prizes offered for the original race. The tola li sat or will be open on each division, the first of which opens the day’s racing, while the second will be the fourth < ent of the day. Appended below are the starting times, acceptan- . cos and a glance through the card. 12.30: NOVICE STAKES, 5 furlongs.— ‘list Division—Unseen. Bella Rosa, Moonbeam, Foreign Star, Starlight, I spy 8.4, Trumpet Blast, Impossible Polygraph. Coat of Arms, Orris. First Course, Theatin, Horotiu 8.0. With only 41bs. separating the field punters may expect a turn-up in a race like the Novice Stakes. A lot will depend on the jump-out, but preference.may be for Trumpet Blast Moonbeam Orris 1.15: LONG BEACH HACK, 1 mile.—Top Rank 9.8, Free Air 9.8, Importance, Cottingham 9.6, Monastic, Tea Garden 9.5, Doiran, Grampian, Velvet 9.4, Morepork, Elgindale 9.2, Braw Lad, Sun gem, Jolly Beggar, Silver Step, Hostile, Palatinate, Epris, Hunting Go The Longbcaeh Hack, run over a mile will provide plenty of material for punters to work on. There are nineteen acceptors, most of whom have still to race over the distance and on account of this fact alone the betting should be evenly distributed with preference for Velvet Braw Lad Elgindale 1.40: SELMA TROT, 3.43 class, 14 miles. —Boltaire, Drag Harlan, Edgar Wallace, Epilogue, Ironside, Midshipmaid, Nelson’s Child, Noble Prince, Paragon, Sage King, Vanity Fair, Wild Wrack, Zest scr, Don Wrack, Starvale 12, Charteris Vale, Doris Derby, Wild Dreams 24, Ad sum 36. ASHBURTON HANDICAP, 1| miles —Davolo 9.9, Argentic 8.9, Ranelagh 8.8, Ventrac 8.5, Some Shambles 8.2, Giggleswick 7.9, Silver Sight, Cleaner 7.7, Locksley, Tout le Aloud, Coll 7.0. 'The Ashburton Handicap is made up of a field of eleven with Davolo in pride of place with 9.9. Campbell’s horse has always been regarded as a miler only, but his convincing win over the distance during the National meeting points to him having a royal chance with all his weight. Argentic did not race up to expectation during August. Ranelagh may find the distance a bit too far, but Ventrac •frith 8.5 will be one of the favourites. Some Shamble has won twice over the distance and showed up well at the National meeting. Giggleswick has a handy weight and although he failed badly at Riccarton he is capable of making a great showing with 7.9. Silver Sight is one of the best of the lightweights and is very consistent. Cleaner and Tout le Monde read the best of the others. Solid backing may be accorded Ventrac Silver Sight Cleaner ’ 3.30: PENSCROFT HACK, 6 furlongs.— Grand Review 9.0, Sam Smith 8.13, Horowhenua 8.10, Master Reynard 8.9, Cheap Money, Travenna 8.8, Sea Fox 8.6, Jacobin, Brown Pearl, Silver Jest 7.13, Moonbeam 7.8, Maroha, Gold Cross 7.5, Knock Out, Rose of Tralee 7.0.
