BIG HOLD UP

AT CONEY ISLAND Gangsters Get 427,000 Dollars (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received August 22 at 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 21. Fifteen bandits, armed With sub machine guns and automatics, this nffe.noon looted an armoured lorry of 427 thousand dollars in cash.. and then escaped through a cordon of l>olice, who, when the alarm was given, surrounded the entire borough of Brooklyn, In a quiet street near a Coney Is land amusement resort, the lorry was halted to make one of numerous collections of cash for deposit in the bank. The guards took no notice of a group of nondescript loungers, but, at a signal from one of the bandits the robbery star led. and it was completed within ih.ee minutes. A tattered pedlar, who bad been purhing a cart in the vicinity, suddenly ripped the cover from th? vehicle, and then trained throe submachine guns on the guards. Three high-powered automobiles appeared a few seconds later. The bandits then collected tin money, ami they , sped away. The guards pursued them, fi.ing a machine gun at the bandits’ automo biles, which disappeared in the crowded traffic. Within Qu hour, one o ’ *hc ru 4omobiles was found near Coney I sand Beach. It is reported that the mon wer<> seen bundling sacks into a fast motor launch. The police believe that the ban.l ts r.,sed this method to escape. Police launches and aeroplanes are now conducting a wide search.
