WEEK-END ACTIVITIES. Itugby Football: WESTPORT. August 29. . The week end Rughv prog*, a tn me | not a very elaborate one. The Victoria Square was the venue for a p>ckey match, ami only two games 'Ore played on tin* trotting track. I i* desire to follow the doings of the 'll Blacks uver the wireless, these ajues were neglectcd as fair as spectators 'were coneermal. They were ?layed in beautiful weather, -with the LfTOUnd, despite previous heavy rai'i, r u good condition. Star- landed a d<Nlt>le, the lhird> running away with ; hy points in their match with Technical School, and the junio.as defeaied Old Boys after a strenuous game. Stars Too Good: The junior game between Stars and Old Boys in the Prince Memorial competition was fought over th< Whole journey at a crackling pave. Over vigorous football was introduced at times, and had a tendency to make players depart from the rules of the I gaum. As a result of a bright passing bout by Star backs. Brown got over fur out. which were the only points scored in the opening halt. The forwards engaged in a vigorous Struggle in the second spe’.l, and playflflrs became heated with the result that three were ordered to the side Hxur. Stars continued to hold the up per hand, and quick, timely passing among.-t the backs ended in K. Brown scoring an unconverted try Worthington, after missing one sitter, 'landed a penalty goal for Old Boy-'. Prior to full time. Woodward, for fttars, was entrusted 'with a penalty kick. The ball dropped short, ami Rvun, following up fast, gathered in to run over for an easy try, which Woodward converted. There was no further scoring. Stars 11 points, O'd Boys 3. Stars now hold a one point pWd in the lower section of the Albion Cup competition. The •.mslaughts mf Star backs we-.ie more penetrative than those launched by their opponents. The work of tho forwards we ion a par. K. Brown, who also played in the third grade fixture, was responsible for some great football. Khorrock was also reliable in the forwards. Ryan, Spencer and Brown ivere always prominent. For Old Bovs LVeenink, Scandrett and Blumhardt wrere a valuable trio. Worthington gave a good display at full-back, but his line kicking was not as true as that of Cargill. Joey Com<*. ford, like his baking powder, rose to the occasion. and was a tower of strength to Qid Boys. Mr Phibbs as referee was impartial, and handled a difficult game with credit. Denniston Derby A Draw: A match which attracted much attention in the country was piavul during the -week-end at Denniston when pirates ami Burnett’s Fact* m°t in the Prince .Memorial competition. iTho game endftd in a draw’, both sides weiring 6 points. Hamilton got a try «ud Hannah a penalty foa Pirates. For Bachelors, Madden scored a try and Doyle a penalty goal. Tlx* Donafa't or correspondent id' the “Argus’ will probably describe the play. Star Thirds Still Winning: Stan third string, with the bright passing and clever tactics whi<*h have marked their displays this season, completely outwitted the Technical School team at the trotting track on Saturday. Star backs «were always in the picture, and being kept busy by their shrewd little half. Noel t’omerford. that department were responsible for preserving the unbeaten record of the side this season. The brothers. K. and E. Brown, pteyed like tradesman and participated in some rounds of passing that were pnetty to watch. The former ran over for the first try of the match, and N. Comerford added the points. The latter then bobbed over, and K. Brown converted Noel scored his second trv bv handing out a few clever dummies, ami K. Brown was again successful with the kick at goal, E. Brown worked nicely with his brother, and added a try, which Finnerty converted. Git- - Parkinson thou ran round the opposition to swell the Star score by a further 3 points. T. O’Gorman reg.terad n try for the students, which was n°t improved upon. E. Brown scored the final try of the game for Stars, the latter winning the game b\ 26 points to 3. For School. Anderson. O’Gorman, Mooue, Weenink, Knight and Nottle were the best, and for Stars, Brown Bros., Comerford an 1 Murphy were the most prominent ot an ttyfl-round good combination. M> MeGreevy was referee. Referee Saves Awkward Situation: The prompt action of Referee Phibbs, who was in charge of affnte* at the trotting track <»n Saturday when Old Boys and Stars met in thPrince Memorial competition, saver what looked like developing into r Corry spectacle. Football was over

vigorous, ami at limes then* -was iniiuli talking. Fists began to tly mid ihs garni* might have ended in a free-for-all were it not for the firm action <>f the referee in ordering the offenders to the side line. The Rugby Union should treat these mattters seriously and show players that they can n*ot •! what they like. The penalty for l><‘havioufl of the kind should be mad? more severe. 'The attendeuce of spectators is never of big proportions at the trotting track,, ami the abovementioned conduct will not mend matters or bring- the gamp into favour at the venue. One of the offenders sent to the side line continued to use unsportsmanlike references concerning tin* referee, but was shrewd enough not to let that official hear t hem. Popular Hockeyite: The members of the picton ladies’ hockey team, who made themselves very popular since their arrival in Westport, iweite given a rousing send off Ju the vicinity of the Empire Hotel yesterdav morning. A tournament is to be held i n that township early in September, ami a strong team of Westport amateurs will take part. Messrs A.
