THIRD DAY’S RESULTS Keen Interest Displayed The third day of the Competitions Festival was entered yesterday when even more enthusiasm than that which marked the previous day’s was in evidence. 'There was a lengthy list of events to be disposed of, and the judges had a very busy time. Bond, “The Quest.” The judge, Mi Lester, said the winner hltd handled a difficult selection with considerable skill and good taste. She avoided the danger of overdoing the pathos. The second competitor was technically very good. She had considerable feeling for word values and failed a little in the climax. Miss Richardson attempted one of the most difficult mono logues in the section. She has considerable ability and has improved a great deal since last year.

The judge, Mr Meldrum, said that while several of the speakers treated the subject, as was to have been expected, from the basis of past development and present conditions in the Dominion, only one, Mr Gilbert, had dealt with the spiritual aspect of New Zealand’s future. The speeches had been interesting, and the other two recalled had been equal, but Mr Gilbert obtained highest marks on account of the greater completeness of his speech.

The judge said there had been some very nice singing in this class. He would like to hear more New Zealand songs. Why sing about the glories of other countries while we in New Zealand had glorious scenery which could be given vivid expression in song. The judge said the winner gave a mos t expressive rendition of his song. In this class there had been some very nice and enjoyable singing. The main fault was the breathing. If one could not breathe properly, the tone was affected. Parents could even help in this direction by teaching their children to breathe properly. He would like to see singing taken up in the schools, for with the younger generation rested our future musicians.
