A BUSY DAY f«[j i / — Saturday’s Results IMPROVED ATTENDANCES. Bright sunshine greeted the second day of the Competitions on Saturday, and the attendance at nil sessions was a. marked improvement. The three halls wore kept going all. day, the judges having a busy time disposing of the large entry list. A popular innovation were the bandsmen’s solos, and this in future should entice not only local bandsmen but also visiting artists. In all classes there was keen and close competition, and finalists at the evening session were accorded enthusiastic receptions. To-day there is a big programme to be gone through and the public are assured of excellent entertainment. The following are Saturday’s awards: — MORNING RESULTS. The second competitor danced well, but her positions were not so good. She should dance closer to the swords.

RECITATION, Girls 9 and under 12, “Jack o’ Dreams.”—D. Congreve 82 pts 1; M. Courtenay 81 pts 2; Z. Austin and E. Hamilton 80pts 3. H.c.: J. Patterson 79pts. Also competed: V. Gilmore, A. TTeaphy, N. The winner had made the most of the piece, she being natural and most expressive. The second competitor had the right atmosphere, but lacked the expression of the winner. It was a difficult class to separate, only one point separating the majority.

The judge, Mr Dixon, said that the winner gave a very expressive rendition and put a great deal of character into the piece. Her finger work was very good. The judge, Mrs Triggs, said the dancing in this class was of a fairly high standard. The winner gave a light and pleasing performance. The second competitor had a nice style but was inclined to stamp. HUMOROUS SONG, own selection (final). —Miss E. Finch 86pts 1; Mr J. H. Keddie 85pts 2. H.c.; Mrs H. Prescott, Miss G. Higson, Miss K. M. Ainger, Miss Radcliffe. The judge said that there was not much humour put over by the competitors. The trouble was that they thought more about the singing than the humour. More attention should be paid to the humour and in a class of that kind the singing should be a secondary aspect. The winner was easily the best and put it over quite saucily. The second competitor got the most humour out of his selection.

SONG WITH OBLIGATO, own selection (final). —Miss A. Radcliffe 87pts 1; Mrs Turnbull. 86pts 2. H.c.; Miss Finch. The judge said that this was a most interesting class. The winner gave a most expressive and artistic rendition, as also did the instrumentalists. The other competitor was most artistic and expressive. She was most excellently assisted by the piano and violin.

RECITATION, Girls 12 and under 16, “Morning Thanksgiving” (final). —Miss V. McDonnell 83pts 1; Miss Z. ’Peters 82pts 2; Miss L. Jeffries (Christchurch) Slpts 3. V.h.c.: Miss S. Sanders (Hokitika). H.c.; Miss J. Wasley. The judge said that the work in this class had improved since last year. The winner had given an excellent performance and possessed a good understanding of elocution.
