Of Royal Navy CONDITIONS OF SERVICE. Candidates must be the sons of Bri tish born parents, and be of good character and education, and dentally and medically fit. The age limits are from 151 to 161 on the date fixed for final entry, but applications will be received from candidates between IB rears 5 months and 16 years 7 months on that dale. Candidates outside the of 151—161, however, will be entered only if sufficient suitable candidates between 151—161 are not forthcoming. Requirements are published in the newspapers from time to time, and application should be made to the nearest Defence Office. Arrangements will usually be made for preliminary examinations (Educational and Medical) to be conducted locally, after which the names of candidates recommended for entry will be forwarded to the Commanding Officer, 11.M.5. “Philomel,” Auckland. Candidates will be notified if they are required to proceed to Auckland for final examination and interview, and if entered, they will be on probation for a period of six months. The period of the first engagement is for 12 years, excluding time under the age of 18. If a rating so wishes he is usually allowed to re-engage for a second period of 5 years, and finally for a third period of 5 years, making 22 years in all from the age of 18. A ntan who elects to lie discharged on the expiration of his first or second engagement continues liable for service in the event of war until he attains the age of 40. Candidates are entered as Boys, 2nd Class, proceeding thence to Boy Ist Class, Ordinary seaman, Able seaman. Suitable Able seamen are advanced in vacancies to Leading seaman, Petty Officer and Chief Petty Officer, subject to passing the required examinations and to recommendation.

Pay: The daily rates of pay are at present as follows: Boy 2nd Cl, lid; Boy, Ist Cl, 1/7 to 2/3; Ord. Seaman 4/6; Able Seaman 6/4 to 6/8; Leading Seaman 7/3 to

7/6; Petty Officer 8/2 to 8/9; <’« Petty Officer 9/6 to 9/11.
