To-night in the Blaketown Hall the Surf Club hold an old time dance. , These dances are having a good run, as last Monday over 80 couples were present. The funds go towards build ing a club house on the beach. Two novelties will be on the programme, a Monte Carlo and a statue dance. Billy Williams’ Orchestra will dispense old time music. 'The floor is in fine order, and a lively M.C. will control proceedings. Dancing at 8.30 sharp, and admission 1/- all round. DERRY S BAND. VISIT TO GRF.YMOFTH. Derry’s Military Band has had a long career, but it is doubtful whether it has ever played as well as it is at present. Since Lieut. H. Gladstone Hill has had charge the Rand has developed along the linos of the English Army military bands, with the result that its work is full of lifeand vigour. Its visit to Greymouth on Saturday. May 19th. will be looked forward to with great interest, for not only will the band be hoard in concerted military band work. but lhe assisting artists are of such a calibre that it is a reasonable claim of the management that it is providing one of the finest musical programmes ever heard in Greymouth. The Christ church Harmonica Band of twentyfive members under the baton of Mr Norman A. Carson, will perform. This band of young enthusiasts is most popular over the air and on the concert platform. At Timaru recently where they performed with Derry’s, they had a wonderful reception. Afr and Mrs Leslie Scrimshaw will be the vocalists, and they a re an excellent couple. Mrs Scrimshaw was a gold medal winner a t Wellington competitions in 1932. She has a delightful lyric soprano voice. Master Trevor Hutton, the eleven-ye.ar-old boy flautist. is a delight to listen to. The soloist members nf the band will be Mr Cyril Muschamp (saxophone), Mr Albert Hutton (piccolo), and Mr Frank Geoghegan (xylophonist). The band and party numbers 80 persons, and will arrive by the express on the 19th and march to the Town Hall. The concert at night commences at 8 o’clock. The box plan is now open at Kilgour’s. D.C. and front stalls 2/6, back stalls 1/6; no tax.
