BRITAIN v. JAPAN Farmers’ Ultimatum (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, May 4 The Rt. Hon. Walter Runciman, president of the Board of Trade, has informed the Japanese Ambassador, Mr, Tsudco Alatsudaira, that Britain would be compelled to put quotas into operation failing an agreement. He assured Mr. Matsudaira that Britain would take this action with reluctance. Mr. Matsudaira had no new proposal tn put forward, and accepted the formal declaration which was cabled to Tokio. The Dominion Governments are being informed of all moves, but it is understood jhat they are considering the matter independently. Prince and Princess Kaya, of Japan, and Sir Robert Clive, who is replacing sir Francis Lindley as British Ambassador to Japan, were the principal guests at a dinner in London last night. Prince Kaya, in a graceful speech, expressed his happiness in visiting Great Britain, which the Japanese regarded with feelings of special inti macy, for ihe two great Island Empires had much in common in their national circumstances. They were bourn] together by strong ties of amity and friendship. and between them there had been a close alliance andfaithful co-operation. Sir Robert Clive said that he bad a deep sentimental affection for Japan and was happy to be returning to live among “the charming people who always remained true to the tradition of friendship with Britain.” Sir Robert Clive has been in the diplomatic service at Rome, Tokio.
