WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Small Farms Scheme: WESTPORT, February 14. A a. recent meeting of the local Farmers’ L’nion. it was decided to make an emphatic protest against th-* policy of the Government in settling men under the Small Fauns Scheme The Union expressed the \»i> nion that the policy would only tend to a< ■ centuate the difficulty of dairy farmins. Increased production, the Union Hated, was not desirable in view of the impending imposition of the quota in Huitain. The Minister oi Agriculture in reply Vo the protest by the Union, wrote: “I am surprised that your l’nion should accept, the doctrine that New Zealand is now producing as much dairy produce as is desirable, and youn statement that this doctrine should apply even though the. industry were in a much better position is to say the least ast’onishing. I can only assume that you imagine that a quota restriction is imminent and that this quota would be based on present output. Accepting thi s idea. New Zealand's export to England in present ligures would b ( . say 126,0(M> tons of butter. If we had not increased ou».i production in the past five years, the quota would be based un a production of say 67,00(1 tons. It appears to me that New Zealand being only partially developed, the higher the figure on which a quota would be based. the better it would be for us. Taking th s view of the case, it would ap pear that tin* placing of a number of unemployed on the land will not materially alter the prospects of the "l her farmers of New Zealand.’’ Weekly Social Function: There was a big attendance at, th* Labour Rooms last evening when the weekly social function conducted by the local Branch of the Labour Party was held.
