AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS MEN’S DOUBLES RESULTS. SYDNEY, January 23. The Australian Tennis Championships were continued to-day. Results wore:— Men’s Doubles, second round.—McGrath and Moon defeated Purcell and Clemenger 6/2, 7/5, 6/1; (’rawford and Hopman defeated Hone and Schwartz 6/3, 5/7, 11/9, 12/10: Perry and Hughes defeated Thompson and Moore 3/6, 7/5, 6/1. 8/6; Turnbull and Quist defeated Dunlop and Angas 6/2 6/2. 6/4. Women’s Singles, second round.— Miss Valkenburg defeated Miss Purdy 6/2, 6/4; Miss Bickerton defeated Mrs McTaggett 6/2, 6/0. Quarter-final. — Miss Wilson defeated Mrs Westacott 2/6, 10/8, 6/3. Oawford and Hopman were hard
pressed throughout their match beinv troubled by excellent serving and volleying on the part of the giant Hone. Thompson and Moore started brilliantly against Perry and Hughes, and they had set point for two sets to love lead. Then Moore missed the amplest of smashes. Thompson plavod groat tennis throughout, but Moore was not experienced enough. Hughes’s retrieving in this match was amazin-r Dunlop and Angas were outclassed by the South Australians Qui«t and Turnbull. The New Zealander Angas, was the weakest of the four He was frequently caught with the ball at his feet, as he failed to come far m to the net on his service, which he repeatedly dropped. Miss Wilson caused a surprise bv eliminating Mrs Westacott, the stron® Queensland champion. ”
