STAMP THEFT
From State Collection NEWFOUNDLAND MINISTER CHARGED (Received January 23 at 7 p.m.) ST. JOHN’S (Newfoundland,). January 22. The arrest of Hon. W. J.' Welsh on a charge of larceny, his release on four thousand dollars bail. ana the acceptance of his resignation as Minister of Agriculture and Mines from the Newfoundland Government, provided (sensations ta-day as the Department of Justice continued u-i invest igat-on into thefts of stamps from the Government’s 120.000 dollar collecti'.'n. The Minister is charged with having appropriated 300'0l vol times of unused stamps valued at between five and six thousand dollars, from the closed Newfoundland Museum. housed in the same building as hiS Department. The total losses from the Museum and St. John’s Post Office are estimated at 60,000 dollars. Other arrests are expected within a few days.
The stamps have been collected bv th' 1 Government for over half a century, and have been m the two buildings for safe keeping.
