They were yarning about “friendship” on a) j Auckland-North Shore ferry boat the other evening, and it was agreed that the ideal mate was one that would stick to you through thick and thin, right or wrong. “There’s not many mates like that,” remarked an old fellow thoughtfully, “but I’ve got one. We’ve been pals for forty years.” “Never quarrelled?’’ he was asked. “Never onee,” he said. “Has ho ever tried to borrow off you?” somebody asked with a wink. “Never!” said the ancient, “here he is, gentlemen!”—and he pulled out an old briar pipe! When I fill him up of a night, after tea, with my favourite brand, Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), and lay back in my old arm-chair, I wouldn’t call the Queen my aunt!’’ Everybody laughed. “That’s New Zealand toasted, isn’t it?” asked someone. He nodded. “There’s other toasted brands,” he said, “Riverhead Gold, Cavendish, and Na.vy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog)—all prime, and all harmless. The toasting gets the nicotine out of them.” Then the boat got in and the conclave broke up.
