The track wajin splendid order. The totalisatoi ihandled £5,997 compared with £1.977 when a one-day meeting was held at Nelson last year, on April 21. which was an increase of £4.020. I he chief event, (he Richmond Handicap. was won in convincing fashion Iby the Meth ven-owned and trained three-year-old filly Waress. Royal Audo won the opening (‘vent from I Modern Lady, although the general tipinion was that the judge’s placing was incorrect and that Portlight ran (second. Sister Mary won the first trot in a good finish with I’atihmaw, whilst Jl)oii Chenault fluked a win in the I second't rot, as Bronte looked all over a winner, but broke badly in the fast ! fifty yards. The saddle race produced a keen contest, but Lucky Guy was I fortunate in winning as the favourite, iGuyziah. which ran second, sustained a serious setback when attempting a | run on I In* rails two furlongs from home. Gunmetal provided a thrill in the Intermediate Handicap, when ho came round a big field to win in a (close finish with Ruin and Recess, iliiiin had a little in reserve in winning the Tahumi Handicap from Liljian Bond, whilst Royal Parade won the Hash Handicap from Lord Leslie jin a good finish, but the latter got a bad passage throughout. The meeting was ably conducted by tin' ofli-h-ia.ls of the ('lnb. assisted by members of the Groymoiith '('rotting Club. The (.Municipal Band was in attendance am! I rendered numerous pleasing items. Following the running of the Richmond Handicap, the owner and the trainer-driver of War Officer. the favourite. were very disappointed at the showing of the horse, a.nd called the attention of the Stipendiary Steward i Mr F. J. Beer). I’pon looking over Hie hopples it was found that they | had been unscrupulous!v let out one and a halt’ incites longer. The con necliojis of the favourite. Mr M. Gorman (ow ner > and M. B. NOTES ON THE MEETING. Goldfield did not begin at all well in the Tahuna Handicap yesterday, but should be a better investment in saddle to-day. If she leaves the mark

it should not. be any great effort, for her, whilst as she has shown previously ii would not be beyond her to again perforin well in a later event, in harGolden Direct was not started yesterday, but is likely to be a starter to-day, and he should be a. good investment in the Gold Coast Handicap. Lord Leslie was an unlucky horse yesterday. He was pocketed all the way in the Dash Handicap, and ha.d he got out earlier would have undoubtedly returned a winning dividend, to his popular West Coast owner. Dawn Sonoma was in the lead for the greater distance in the saddle event at Victoria Park yesterday, and can be relied upon to go a good race to-day. Fernbrook Lass surprised by her forward showing in the Tahuna Handicap, and her form would suggest that her possibilities for to-day are very good. Portlight was the most promising maiden seen out at Victoria Park yesterday, and was unlucky in not being awarded a minor placing. lie should be good investment to-day. Thornworthy had to cover a lot of ground on the outside of the field in the Trial Handicap, but was found wanting over the last bit. Priceless appeared to be lame in his preliminary, but ran a good race in the Richmond Handicap yesterday, and was full of running at the finish. However, in the Dash Handicap he [was never very prominent and did not run as well as was expected. Waress, who hag twice won at Victoria Park “ previously, won smartly yesterday, and will be well supported in her engagements to-day. Gold Paper began poorly yesterday and failed when called for an effort in the run home. However, she conceded a good start to the placed horses, but was prominent in the running of the race.
