STATE CONVENTION

EARLY IN 1934. MELBOURNE, June 14. The Comiuonowealth Government has abandoned for the time being its proposal to hold a Constitution Convention. When the question was discussed at the Premiers’ Conference, only Tasmania and South Australia, supported the Commonwealth plan. Other States supported a proposal by Mr. Stevens that before the convention was held, a conference of Premiers should deal with the existing difficulties and, in effect, carry out the useful preparatory work. It was agreed that the conference be held early iu 1934. The Premier of Western Australia (Mr. Collier) indicated that he would submit the case for separation of Western Australia from the Commonwealth to Imperial authorities. Mr. Collier implied a. rejection of the case for secession, by adding that after the decision was reached, he was prepared to participate in any conference with the other States, and later join in the Constitution Convention.
