At a meeting of the Grey Philharmonic Society last evening, Mr C. Staffan was appointed conductor, in place of Mr F. Restieaux. Air ITughie McConnell, of Runanga, underwent a successful operation at the Grey Hospital on Tuesday, and is now making satisfactory progress, A Sydney cable states that Doctor D. A. Maguie has been elected the Grand Master of the United Order of Freemasons in New South Wales. Mr Geoffrey T. Cuthbert, now in the head office of the Public Works Department. has boon appointed from among 140 applicants as engineer to the Poverty Bay Power Board, in succession 1o the late Mr Howard Bussell. The following toasts were honoured: ‘-The King,” ‘‘Our Guest.” ‘‘The Church Trustees,” ‘•The Ladies' Guild,” ‘‘The Sunday School.” •‘The Bible Classes,” and “Our Minister.” Musical items were rendered by Mesdamcs M. Clark and 11. T. Smith. Miss Fuller, and Messrs Ashurst ami Nelson. In proposing the toast of Mr Restieaux, Rev. Harris referred to tl’.e esteem in which he was hold, not only in the immediate circle represented, but by the whole of the citizens of the town and district. The Church had found in him a genial, willing and capable worker in the musical life of the church, ns organist and choir-master, and the members were sincerely sorry to lose his services. Their best wishes would follow him. and they hoped he would soon find conditions of comfort and prosperity which were so well deserved. Mr Harris herded the guest an envelope of notes, a a tangible token of the esteem of the church congregation. Mr Restieaux briefly thanked the Chairman and congregation for their kind sentiments towards him and for their gift. lie had enjoyed a very happy period of service in the church amt regretted very much the necessity or leaving them and the district.
