RUNANGA BOROUGH

SPECIAL MEETING OF COUNCIL. A special meeting of the Runanga Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening to go into the financial position of the borough, and it was decided a.fter considerable discussion by the Councillors, that they would be compelled to inflict a. ten per cent. wages cut on the Town Clerk ami Foreman, ami fifteen per cent, cut on the casual employees. Each Councillor was reluctant. Io adopt such a practice, but owing to the coal mines working bad time and the people being unable to pay their rates, it vas found to be absolutely necessary to make the reduction. This was, however, the first occasion on which any reductions had been made. The Council decided also to practice the strictest economy, and towards this end one of the lorries will be put out of action for twelve months. As far as the wages cuts arc concerned, they will bo reviewed in three months* time. A deputation from the relief workers. consisting of Messrs Wootton, Garvey. MeTaggart, Hart and Wright sought the assistance of the Council to set up a boot repairing outfit. 'fhe Council decided to give them a room in the garage, and loaned them £5. Cr. Bowes and Cr. Southward offered donations to the unemployed, which were thankfully received. The deputation also asked the Council to supply them with tools on relief jobs, and this matter will be discussed at next meeting. The deputation referred to the wet time question a.nd desired to work half a day if it rained. This matter was also held over until next meeting for consideration.
